The fund gave you back some of the money you put in, rather than paying you a profit it earned. You are not taxed on it now. Instead it lowers what the taxman treats as the price you paid, so if you ever sell, your gain is bigger by the same amount. Many high-yield funds pay a lot of this — it is normal, and it is why a big headline yield is not always the same thing as a big profit.

Profits paid out by Canadian companies. Canada taxes these more gently than regular income through the dividend tax credit, so a dollar of eligible dividend is usually worth more to you after tax than a dollar of interest.

The fund sold something for more than it paid and passed you a share of the profit. In Canada only half of a capital gain is taxable, so this is one of the lighter kinds of income to receive.

Money that came from outside Canada. It is fully taxable here, and the country it came from may already have kept some tax before it reached the fund.

Income that does not fit the friendlier categories — usually interest, or option premium. It is taxed at your full rate, the same as employment income.
